What does an AC repair visit from Boisvert include?

The office starts by asking what kind of system you have: a central split system, a ductless mini split or a rooftop unit. That decides which technician comes and what goes on the truck. A licensed HVAC technician (CT license HTG.0405214-S1) tests the system, shows you what failed, and prices the repair before doing it. Is your air conditioner worth repairing?

Check the refrigerant first. An air conditioner built before 2010 usually runs on R-22, which the EPA hasn’t allowed to be produced or imported since 2020, so only recovered stock is left. Recharging an R-22 system after a leak costs far more than the same repair on a newer unit, and a failed compressor on one is a replacement conversation. The label on the outdoor unit lists the refrigerant. Age is the second test. Under about 10 years, a single failed part such as a capacitor, contactor or fan motor is worth fixing. Past 10, a major repair is usually money better spent on replacement.

Another quick test: multiply the system’s age by the repair price. A 12-year-old unit with a $500 repair scores 6,000, and past 5,000, replacement usually makes more sense.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Working?

Most AC breakdowns trace back to a thermostat setting, a tripped breaker or outdoor disconnect, a clogged filter, a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit, or a clogged condensate line that trips the system’s safety switch. The first three cost nothing to check: thermostat on Cool and below room temperature, breaker and the disconnect box by the outdoor unit on, filter not packed with dust. If the copper lines or the outdoor unit are iced, turn the system off for a few hours to thaw before anyone tests it. A dead AC on a hot night can usually wait until morning, which also avoids after-hours overtime rates. Water leaking from the AC

Water from an air conditioner almost always comes from the condensate drain, the line that carries off the moisture the indoor coil pulls out of the air. When it clogs, the pan overflows. In homes heated by a boiler, central air usually runs through its own air handler in the attic, so a clogged line shows up as a stain on the ceiling below it. On a ductless head it runs down the wall, and on a rooftop unit it comes through the ceiling tiles. Turn the system off and call.

Fan running but no cold air

If the outdoor fan runs and the vents blow warm air, the problem is usually outside: a failed capacitor or compressor, or low refrigerant from a leak. If you hear the outdoor unit but feel almost no air at the vents, look indoors. The blower that moves cold air through the house sits in the furnace or air handler, with the cooling coil usually right on top of the furnace. A failed blower motor, a frozen coil or a clogged filter stops airflow while the outside keeps running. Replace the filter, and if air doesn’t return within an hour, shut the system off and call.
